More and more companies are making a stand against poverty
23 June 2017A growing number of companies have now signed up to the Local Living Wage, making a stand against poverty and supporting the local economy of Cheshire West and Chester. These companies include: Weaver Vale Housing Trust, Brookside Primary School, All Saint’s Church, R A Chilton Ltd, Cheshire West Citizens Advice Bureau, plus more.
Councillor Paul Donovan, Cabinet Member for Democracy and Workforce, said: “We are really encouraged that interest in the Local Living Wage is gaining momentum and companies are now signing up to the charter. More and more working age adults are facing poverty with the increase in housing, food and fuel prices. Despite Cheshire’s affluent image, almost 20 per cent of households within the Cheshire West and Chester borough have an annual income of £15,000 or less. Our ambition is to make west Cheshire a Local Living Wage borough where all residents are well educated, skilled and earn a decent living.”
Northwich based company, Active Cheshire Limited, works with a wide range of sport, health, education, environment, transport and business partners, with the aim to improve the health and wellbeing of local residents through physical activity and sport. Chief Executive, Anne Boyd, recognises the importance of the Local Living Wage for her team “We fully support the Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Local Living Wage initiative as we believe it is fair for our people and it delivers key benefits for our business. It has helped us to deliver growth and to attract and retain first class talent. Fundamentally, we have found that our commitment to our workforce has resulted in them going the extra mile to deliver our organisational aims.”
Cheshire West Citizens Advice Bureau (CWCAB) is the largest independent advice service in Cheshire, providing information, advice and practical assistance to people living and working in Cheshire West and Chester. With offices in Chester, Ellesmere Port, Northwich and Winsford, CEO Paul Nicholls has recently signed up to the Local Living Wage charter, “Cheshire West Citizens Advice assists hundreds of people every year who are badly affected by low pay and poor working conditions. This means we understand the importance of everyone receiving a decent wage for the work they do. The trustees and management of CWCAB are proud to be paying the Local Living Wage to all staff.”
Cheshire West and Chester Council recently launched the Local Living Wage charter to make west Cheshire a Local Living Wage borough, where everyone can earn a decent living and the economy can thrive. This is a voluntary scheme, encouraging employers to pay their staff aged 18 or over a minimum of £8.45 per hour. Employers that pay the Local Living Wage report: lower absenteeism, lower staff turnover, higher productivity and greater motivation and morale. Employers that sign up to the charter can also receive business support from the Council’s Business Growth team in relation to staff training and apprenticeship opportunities, as well as the introduction to key networking events.
