Chester Business Leaders endorse first phase of Northgate development

14 December 2018

A second meeting of the working group of the Chester Growth Partnership set up to feed ideas into the Chester Northgate development has taken place. The group was formed to provide private sector input into the redevelopment proposals for the Northgate area of Chester and is made up of interested parties from across the city.

Chair of the Chester Growth Partnership, Peter Carstensen, who also chaired the working group said: “The group endorsed the proposals for an early phase of the development to be delivered at pace which will include relocating the market, a new cinema, restaurants, car parking and improved public spaces.

“The group agreed that the design of the market would be a key factor in the success of the scheme and that the next meeting to be held early in the New Year would concentrate on this element. The group asked for input into the briefing process for the design team and stressed the need for the voice of residents, community and business people to be taken into account as part of the scheme’s ongoing development.

“There was also widespread agreement that the redevelopment of the Northgate area needs to be considered as part of the city-wide vision for the future of Chester, which will form the basis of a future meeting. The group will now meet regularly to review the proposals for this phase prior to the planning application being submitted; currently scheduled for May 2019.”

Councillor Brian Clarke, Cabinet Member, Economic Development and Infrastructure said: “Chester Northgate is the largest scheme to be delivered in the city in many years. The £60 million initial plans for the modern mixed use development will include a new relocated dynamic and modern market, six-screen cinema, restaurants, a public square and car parking. Ensuring that the ideas and opinions of local businesses are included is essential and I am delighted that this group is  helping to shape the plans.”

The Chester Growth Partnership promotes investment in and development of Chester to deliver sustainable growth in line with the aims and ambitions set out in the One City Plan. The One City Plan 2012-2027 identifies over 30 large scale projects including Chester Northgate. To date over £194 million has been invested, delivering major projects including; One City Place, King Charles Tower Green and Chester Bus Interchange.
