Chester welcomes the festival of Diwali on Saturday 19 October

Diwali, the Hindu festival of light is being celebrated in Chester on Saturday 19 October.

The festival is organised by the Sanjhi Indian Association, it starts at 12 noon with a colourful parade from the Town Hall Square to Eastgate Street for a display of traditional Indian dancing at 12.30pm.

Councillor Louise Gittins, Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council and Cabinet Member for Wellbeing said: “We are pleased to be supporting the festival of light celebrations again this year. The city centre will be turned into a sea of bright colours, with spectators dancing along with the Diwali musicians and dancers. Please come along and enjoy the fun.”

Workshops will be held at the Unity Centre in Cuppin Street after the performances, from 2pm to 3pm including Rangoli Diwali art cards, Diya Indian candles, Henna hand painting and Indian face painting. There will also be Indian food available from £3.

Sarika Kaushik, Chairperson of Sanjhi Indian Association said: “We are looking forward to Diwali in Chester on Saturday. Diwali is an international festival celebrated across the world. Our dancers have been rehearsing for many months and always get such an enthusiastic welcome when they perform in Eastgate Street.
