Find out what's happening near you during 'Fun Palaces' weekend at Cheshire West Libraries

3 October 2017

Cheshire West and Chester Libraries are joining 300+ ‘Fun Palaces’ across the UK, which will be filled with free and fun activities, celebrating culture in our community - and you’re invited.

Councillor Louise Gittins, Cabinet Member for Communities and Wellbeing, said: “’Fun Palaces’ is an ongoing campaign with an annual weekend of events each October.  They bring together the cultural skills of those in local communities for others to learn and enjoy, and have previously included artists, scientists, theatre-makers, knitters, astronomers, magicians, gardeners, singers, conservationists, swimmers, dancers, theatre-makers, crafters and more, showcasing and sharing arts, science, technology, history, crafts, digital and sports.

“There’s something for everyone, so come along and discover something new in your library.” There will be Fun Palaces at the libraries in Blacon, Ellesmere Port, Neston and Northwich, on Saturday 7 October, and there will be a whole variety of interactive activities.

At Blacon Library between 9.30am and 1pm you can try henna body art, create a hand print tree, try some simple science experiments or sing in a choir.

At Ellesmere Port from 9am to 1pm, join in a castle making craft session, get creative with LEGO, test your brain in the ‘escape room’, decorate a gingerbread man or create a marble run out of junk with the Waste Doctor.

At Neston Library between 10.30am and 5pm, you can join in craft activities with the scouts and guides, learn about street dance, enjoy an acting workshop with the Little Actors Theatre, take part in local history workshops provided by Burton and Neston Local History group, learn the art of hair braiding and plant some crocus bulbs with the Rotary Club.

In Northwich Library from 10.30am to 8pm, try your hand at 3D printing or create your own digital music.  Become a mad scientist for a couple of hours or learn how to use your mobile phone to take weird and wonderful photographs.  Visitors can also join in some recycling fun with the Waste Doctor or have a tailor made poem written for them by Jo Bell, the former Cheshire Poet Laureate.  You might also spot a film character or two, throughout the day, and in the evening there will be a live lounge, featuring local musicians, bands, poets and even a special performance by the Odeon cinema staff.

Storyhouse will be a Fun Palace across the whole weekend (7 and 8 October), from 10am onwards on both days. The range of activities include making bath bombs and slime, a life drawing class, a CSI puzzle room and letterpress printing. You can also have a go at being in a band as well as watching a performance by the Dee Sign Choir.
