GOING AWAY ON HOLIDAY?
If you are planning to go away on a short break or holiday, you can help protect yourself from becoming a victim of burglary by following these simple steps:

  • Only tell people who need to know you’re going away. Avoid discussing holiday plans on public social networking sites, burglars can use any information you post on there to their advantage.
  • Make your home look occupied by asking a trusted relative, neighbour or friend to pop in each day to open and close curtains, collect the post and water plants. If you are not leaving a car at home ask if they can leave one of their cars on your drive whilst you are away.
  • Use timer switches to turn on internal lights when it goes dark. You can also use a timer switch for a radio (always follow manufacturer’s instructions)
  • Cancel any milk or newspaper deliveries (be careful who can hear you whilst in the shop)
  • Don’t leave curtains closed during the daytime; it could indicate the house is unoccupied.
  • If you normally leave valuable pedal cycles or similar items in your shed, consider putting them in the house (out of sight).
  • Cut your lawn before you go away.
  • Please don’t put your home address on your luggage on the outward journey to your holiday destination.
  • Put all garden tools and ladders away securely so they can’t be used to break into your house.
  • Finally, don’t forget to lock all external doors, windows and gates and set your burglar alarm (if you have one).

Have a safe, happy holiday – don’t forget your passport and tickets!
