New Itunes voucher scam

Alert message sent 22/07/2016 11:06:00

Information sent on behalf of Cheshire Constabulary

Fraudsters are cold calling members of the public claiming to be from the Ministry of Justice or an established local company requesting the caller purchase Itunes vouchers. The fraudster claims they will then visit the caller’s home address to exchange the Itune vouchers for a cheque up to the value of £4000.
The fraudster is requesting the victim call them once they have purchased the Itunes voucher, they will ask for the voucher codes claiming they need this before they attend the victims home address, once the fraudster has these codes they can collect the money without the need to have the voucher in their hand.
The cold caller has been reported to us as using a 020 number, however this may be a spoofed number- this where the number displayed is different number to the one that’s calling you.
There have been several variations of this scam reported recently with several large organisation names  being used to trick people into thinking the call is legitimate.
If you receive such a call, please do not

  • give any personal information
  • Purchase any vouchers, no matter how good the offer seems
Contact the genuine organisation to confirm if they made the call, do not use the number given by the caller, instead look it up online
Contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. Or online at www.actionfraud.police.uk.
