Bogus Scam Phone calls

Alert message sent 15/03/2017 18:54:00

Information sent on behalf of Cheshire Constabulary

Hello again,

I appreciate you may already be aware there are numerous scams out there in all manner of disguises but I feel it was an appropriate time to raise awareness again as we have just had two victims in the last three days.  We feel there could be more who have chosen not to report such incidents to the police and perhaps just reported them to the genuine Bank, Telecoms provider, Insurance Company or other business who these scammers choose to pretend to be.
Monday we had a Hale Village resident who was duped out of £1500 by a telephone caller pretending to be from the broadband/telecoms provider "Talk Talk".  A further Ditton resident today reported a caller to her number was pretending to be from her bank.

Please, if you have an elderly resident nearby, a relative you can contact or some other vulnerable person who you feel may benefit from advice please get in touch with them and help us raise awareness.  The people making these calls are good at it, we know that because we hear from the victims. Our main advice is DO NOT TAKE ANY TELEPHONE CALL AT FACE VALUE IF YOU CANNOT BE CERTAIN THEY ARE GENUINE.

You DO NOT have to continue into a conversation with them. It is NOT impolite to tell the caller you do not want to carry on with the conversation. Do NOT give away ANY personal information at all such as whether you are married, have children, live alone etc. etc. etc.  If you do offer this information it may be added to something they already know about you either from the Internet, social media, guessing (for example your approximate age), your phone number which may have been passed onto them from other scammers and so on.

If you have such a call and feel it was a possible scam or you were indeed fooled into passing information over please report these :

Online to Action Fraud Alert at
by phone 0300 123 2040   Monday to Friday 9 a.m to 6 p.m

Do not feel as though you have just been silly and it was your fault.  REPORT IT!.

Thank You so much for your time.  It's a hard task but your little input does make a lot of difference and I want to thank you in advance for helping.

The following link will show you some evidence that your calls DO help others and helps catch offenders!
