Nights are getting longer

Alert message sent 26/10/2017 10:08:00

Information sent on behalf of Cheshire Constabulary

As the dark evenings begin to return, and the clocks go back, thieves are given a wider opportunity to strike. It is a good time to ensure your home security is ready for the winter. We have already noticed an increase in outhouse/shed burglaries begin in areas of Widnes.

Break-ins tend to be more common as the nights grow longer. Halloween, Bonfire night and the run up to Christmas see obvious increases in criminal activity. Over these days, more people are spending time away from home, meeting up with friends and family or attending festive events.

Remember to keep your home secure at ALL times.

– Keep your door locked when you come in for the evening, as many burglaries happen without forced entry.

– Lock up sheds and garages. Sheds get visited less often in the colder months and sometimes forgotten about. Many people store valuable tools and equipment in sheds, tools could also be used to gain access to your home.

– Security alarms give added protection to homes and businesses, particularly with additional monitoring. Alarms can give you peace of mind and can even act as a deterrent to possible burglars.

– As Christmas approaches and presents begin to stack up, don’t store them in view. Burglars will know the usual storage places for gifts; try to make access difficult, for example stored in the attic rather than under the stairs.

It is this time of year when occupants need to be extra vigilant; however, there are ways and means open to help reduce the risk of burglaries and theft.
