Fraud alert - bank courier fraud

Alert message sent 03/04/2019 08:27:00

Information sent on behalf of Cheshire Constabulary

Good morning,

This is a message to make you aware of a fraud which has been circulating in the local and neighbouring areas.

The fraud involves a victim being contacted by telephone by a person claiming to work for their bank. The victim is informed that their bank cards have stopped working and that a courier will be sent to their address to collect the cards in order to replace them at a later date. Once the cards are collected they are then used by the fraudster to create large expenditures on the victim’s bank accounts.

Investigations to identify the perpetrator(s) are currently taking place and if you believe that you or someone you know may have been a victim of such an incident, please contact police by telephoning 101 or by visiting your local police station front desk, details of which can be found here: https://cheshire.police.uk/contact/police-stations-and-custody-suites-in-cheshire/

Never give personal information to people without verifying their identity, such as by checking ID cards or telephoning a legitimate number for the company. If you believe that someone is not who they say they are you do not have to speak to them and you do not have to do what they ask; remain in control of the situation by asking them questions and, if you are still dissatisfied, terminate the call or tell the person to leave.

Advice on how to spot and prevent potential frauds can be found by visiting the Action Fraud website here: https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/
