Courier fraud scam awareness

Alert message sent 25/01/2020 08:47:00

Information sent on behalf of Cheshire Constabulary

Good morning, all,

Victims in Cheshire have lost almost £100k in the month of December to Courier Fraudsters. They tend to target more elderly people in our communities.

It typically occurs when a suspect contacts victims by telephone purporting to be the Police or bank staff. The victim is persuaded to co-operate with an ‘operation’ designed to gather evidence or identify offenders responsible for a fictional offence. Victims are requested to:

•             withdraw money from their bank;
•             purchase an expensive item;
•             provide their bank card/details to assist with the operation.

The money or item is then handed over to a ‘courier’ who attends the victim’s address or meets them nearby. This is on the promise that the money or item will be returned or compensation provided. The member of the OCG who makes these phone calls is typically referred to as the ‘victim communicator’. The suspect who attends the address is known as the courier.

If you are able to cascade this information to elderly reletives and friends, that would be great :)
